TO MY IMITATORS
I stood before the mirror
still as the light
on your wife's body
before she wakes,
only to watch
my own hand rise
in the depths of the glass.
Ignoble bird of flesh!
you so suddenly rising
from the demilitarized zone
between us! I watched you
flutter towards my neck
like a bird they let
out of a cage
for Cheney to shoot,
choking me. In the mirror
I watched myself dying
while in this world I stood
still as the lectern
the blinded painter
staggers towards
to accept the prize
money on behalf
of the dissenting poet.
Then in the mirror the hand
relaxed, and entire
Niagras of blood
drained from my head
into the wild
New Yorks of my body!
Thank you!
