Map of the Folded World Q&A

A poem from Map of the Folded World is featured today at Pages Rustle.

There’s a short essay on the poem and a Q & A. Here’s the first question:

Q: I’m very much always looking for a poem’s “significance,” and this is a poem that is in some ways resistant to a single way of understanding. As the poet, do you subscribe to McLeish’s idea that “a poem should Be/ not mean”?

Hi John: Was this an e-mail Q&A? I ask because you mentioned painting's influence on you and the interview didn't follow with any questions about painting, which I would have been interested to hear answered.

All the best,

Jason

Jason,

Indeed it was. So there were no follow-up questions.

Painting and poetry are so different. I've always been jealous of painters, they seem to be allowed a more pure exploration of their medium.

I enjoy looking at paintings and asking what they would look like as poems. What the closest analogue might be.
